hulas – eat, drink and play on beachside

Hulas is ready to serve you all day, from breakfast to cocktails, on the Beachside play area.  Adventure golf sits on one side of the boardwalk and the new playground on the other.  It’s a perfect spot to relax after a game of golf, and to watch your children have fun too.  Jamie has been part of the Harbour food scene since 2015 with his hot dogs, ribs and more, currently in The Meat Shack on Harbourside.  Now he’s teamed up with Carly and Chris from Beach Bums to run Hulas.  Folkelife spoke to Chris and Carly on what brought them together.

Chris: “Carly and I started up Beach Bums in 2020.  It was always a surfing-inspired business which soon became a clothing brand.  We would create the designs ourselves and use really good quality products, certified organic cotton, no plastic wrappings, all of that.   We naturally gravitate to the beach, and are pretty laid back in our approach to life.”

Carly: “It’s been great to be a part of the Harbour Marketplace for the past few years.  Our hut there has meant we’ve met so many people who share our loves of 90s/2000s retro designs, cool cars and so on.  It also was the place where we met Jamie.  We both have Frenchies and started to talk to each other because of our dogs.”

Chris: “In 2023, Folkestone Harbour ran a Bavarian weekend event called Wünder Harbour.  Jamie was setting up a Bratwurst stall in The Goods Yard and asked us to come in with him on that.  Hospitality has always been a part of what we do.  As Beach Bums we have a bar that we go to events with, this was the next logical step for us in developing that side of our business.”

Carly: “That weekend was mad!  It was so busy, but it was great fun.  From there we started to think about how we could work together more.  Then the opportunity came up to run the café with the adventure golf and that just seemed to click.  It’s about having fun, at the beach, playing and enjoying some good food and drinks.”

Chris: “We’re open every day from 9am for breakfast.  Our motto is Eat, Drink, Play.  So you’ll find loads of items on the menu that will suit everyone.  It’s all freshly made, using decent quality ingredients; smashed burger patties and sausage patties which Jamie makes himself.  There’s lunch and dinner options as when the sun is out, we’re not bothered about closing on time, we’ll happily stay open as long as people want to play, drink and eat.”

Carly: “It’s such a sun trap, where we are, and you get to see the best sunsets.  Even if you’ve only got half an hour to spend, just looking at that view helps you relax.  We’re really looking forward to 2024, and all that it will bring.  And we’re really looking forward to meeting new customers and helping them have fun here at Folkestone Harbour.”
